The 31-year-old will make the jump to Japan after spending the past nine seasons in affiliated ball upon being drafted by Major League Baseball's New York Yankees in 2014. He made his big-league debut in 2020 and saw action in eight games in the majors in 2022 with the Chicago White Sox but otherwise spent the majority of the campaign at Triple-A Charlotte. Over 539 plate appearances for the White Sox's Triple-A affiliate, Payton slashed .293/.369/.539 with 25 home runs and 15 stolen bases.
