Martinez agreed Wednesday with MLB's San Diego Padres on a four-year, $20 million contract, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Martinez previously spent four years in MLB with the Texas Rangers, but after poor results kept him out of the organization's future plans following the 2017 season, he elected to try his luck overseas. The 31-year-old righty emerged as one of NPB's top arms over the past four seasons, pitching for the Fighters for the first three years before joining the Hawks in 2021. He enjoyed his best campaign in Japan yet with Fukuoka SoftBank, submitting a 1.60 ERA while striking out 138 over 140.2 innings. Martinez will parlay the big season into a return back to North America, where the Padres will likely be counting on him to stabilize the back end of their rotation.
