Crushing loss to Brandon Royval
Nicolau lost to Brandon Royval via KO (strikes) at 2:09 of Round 1 at UFC on ESPN 44 on Saturday in Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
It's an absolutely crushing loss for Nicolau, who entered as a significant -210 favorite. He ducked down a couple minutes into the fight and was greeted by a crushing knee from Royval which set into motion the set of events which ended Nicolau's evening. The Brazilian entered on a six-fight winning streak, with his last defeat prior to this coming against Dustin Ortiz way back in July 2018. Nicolau has a window to recover from this setback considering he turned just 30 years of age in early-January, but it's going to take some time. All three of Nicolau's professional defeats have come via knockout.

Finishes contact with easy win
Nicolau defeated Matt Schnell via KO (punches) at 1:44 of Round 2 at UFC on ESPN 42 on Saturday in Orlando.
ANALYSIS
In a division with room for immediate advancement, Nicolau is taking full advantage of the opportunity. Schnell was his latest victim. An all-around threat with legitimate power and a quality ground game, Nicolau leaned on his striking in this one. He scored two knockdowns in the brief bout and controlled the pace the entire time, seemingly unafraid of whatever Schnell was going to send back his way. Nicolau revealed in his post-fight interview that this was the last bout on his UFC contract, and he purposely decided to fight out his deal before inking a new one. Wise move. The Brazilian has won four straight with the UFC and looks better than ever. He's going to get paid.
