Chlapik could have a larger role in the offense after posting six points in 31 contests with the Senators last year. He was better with AHL Belleville, where he contributed 22 points in 37 outings. Chlapik, a second-round pick from 2015, appears set to skate on the Senators' second line. That assignment would provide him better scoring opportunities, and he may also be in line for power-play usage. The 23-year-old could challenge for 20 points and should provide plenty of hits regardless of his role, but most fantasy managers can afford to draft someone with a better track record than Chlapik.
After appearing in 20 NHL contests in 2017-18, Chlapik played in just five games with the Senators last season, posting one goal while registering a minus-2 rating over that span. That was a bit disappointing, but he did play well in the AHL, recording 16 goals and 34 points in 57 contests. However, that doesn't mean that he'll receive any additional time with the big club in 2019-20. Ottawa has a plethora of young forwards and surprisingly not too many roster spots readily available. Chlapik will have to impress in training camp to make the team, and he'll more than likely need a couple injuries to crack the Senators' lineup this season.
The 21-year-old Chlapik has looked solid at the AHL level, scoring 11 goals and 21 assists last year for AHL Belleville. However, he managed just one goal in 20 games with Ottawa suggesting that the Czech may not quite be ready for the rigors of NHL competition. The Senators are likely to give him a chance to start the season in the NHL but Chlapik will most likely find himself splitting time between Ottawa and Belleville again. If he earns a role with the Senators, he might become worth a look as a waiver-wire addition, but on draft day he can be safely ignored.
