Yahoo DFS Hockey: Tuesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Hockey series.

Now that Presidents' Day is in the past, the work week starts in earnest in America. The NHL enjoyed some matinee action on the holiday, but Tuesday features seven evening games. Here are some players to target, and to avoid, for your daily fantasy lineup.

GOALIE

Carey Price, MON at DET ($37): Price has had a few mediocre starts in a row, but since the start of 2020 he has a 2.22 GAA and .928 save percentage in 18 games. However, even if that wasn't the case I'd love Price in this matchup. The Red Wings have only managed 1.98 goals per contest. Yes, they aren't even scoring two goals per game. They are that bad.

GOALIE TO AVOID

Petr Mrazek, CAR at NAS ($32): Mrazek has a 2.72 GAA, largely because the Hurricanes have only allowed 29.4 shots on net per game. However, on the road that number is up to 30.8 shots on goal per contest. The Predators have managed 34.3 shots on net per game at home, so this could be a busier night for Mrazek than he's used to.

CENTER

Brayden Schenn, STL vs. NJD ($17): Schenn has tallied 20 goals and 27 assists through 59 games. A big reason for that is the fact he already has 19 power-play points, including nine goals with the extra man. As for the Devils, they have a 3.57 road GAA and have allowed 34.8 shots on net per contest in away games.

CENTER TO AVOID

Sean Couturier, PHI vs. CLM ($24): Couturier may fall short of 30 goals after hitting that mark the last two seasons, but he's still having an excellent campaign. Even so, the Blue Jackets pose a difficult matchup. Elvis Merzlikins has a 1.67 GAA and .945 save percentage since taking over as Columbus' starter, and the team has the seventh-ranked penalty kill as well.

WING

Teuvo Teravainen, CAR at NAS ($24): Teravainen has 19 points with the extra man, though he's slowed down in terms of power-play production recently. Not that it's been an issue, as the Finn has 15 points in his last 14 games. This could be the night for Teravainen to find his footing on the power play again, as the Predators have the league's worst penalty kill.

Joel Armia, MON at DET ($14): Armia is quietly having a career year in Montreal. Granted, that only means he has 15 goals and 13 assists in 48 games, but that's not too shabby. More importantly, this is an excellent matchup for anybody to take advantage of. The Wings have a 3.74 GAA. That's highest in the NHL by a wide margin.

WINGS TO AVOID

Mitch Marner, TOR at PIT ($29): Marner is a pricey player, but that's fair given that he has 45 assists through 49 games. This is a tricky matchup, though, as the Penguins have a 2.37 GAA at home. On top of that, Tristan Jarry has a 2.14 GAA and .930 save percentage.

Kyle Palmieri, NJD at STL ($18): Palmieri is a proven goal scorer, although his 16.7 percent shooting is the highest of his career by a decent margin, so some regression could be expected. Simple regression or not, I don't expect much from the 29-year-old in this matchup. The Blues have a 2.45 GAA and have only allowed 28.5 shots on net per game at home.

DEFENSE

Jaccob Slavin, CAR at NAS ($19): Slavin has been a more-than-adequate replacement for Dougie Hamilton while Hamilton has been on the sidelines with injury. In his last nine games Slavin has eight points. He's also averaged 2:38 per game with the extra man in that time, and as I previously noted the Predators have the league's worst penalty kill. The Preds also have a 3.17 GAA.

Jeff Petry, MON at DET ($15): Why wouldn't you want more than one Canadien in this matchup? The Wings have a 3.74 GAA and .886 save percentage. Shea Weber may return for this game, but I'd still be happy to have Petry in my lineup. He's no slouch, as he has 35 points in 61 games, including 11 power-play points.

DEFENSEMEN TO AVOID

Zach Werenski, CLM at PHI ($17): Seth Jones may be injured, but Werenski is still around to pilot things from the blue line. He's scored a remarkable 18 goals in 53 games, though on 12.0 percent shooting that would be a little high for a forward, let alone a defenseman. No team locks things down at home as well as the Flyers though, save for maybe the Jackets themselves. In their own arena, the Flyers have a 2.11 GAA and have only allowed 28.5 shots on net per contest.

Tyson Barrie, TOR at PIT ($20): Barrie has had an inverse to Werenski's season, in that his shooting percentage has dropped to 3.3, the lowest of his career. Part of that is because he's only played 2:28 per game on the power play, the fewest minutes in his career outside of a 10-game cup of coffee in his first season of NHL action. Well the Penguins aren't the team to find puck luck against. After all, Tristan Jarry has a 2.18 GAA and .930 save percentage.
