The Chargers exercised Slater's 2025 fifth-year option, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
This was a no-brainer for new Chargers GM Joe Hortiz. After missing most of 2022 with a torn biceps, Slater returned to start all 17 games last season. As a 2021 rookie, Slater finished fourth in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting, made the Pro Bowl and was a second-team All-Pro selection. The Chargers hope Slater can return to his dominant rookie-year form.

Could be back in postseason
OTLos Angeles Chargers
January 10, 2023
Slater, who missed most of the season with a biceps injury, was designated to return from injured reserve Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Slater has been sidelined since Week 3 with a ruptured biceps. He has already been ruled out for the Chargers' wild-card round matchup against the Jaguars, but this move implies he could see action if the team is able to advance. Slater would slot back in as the starting left tackle and provide a significant boost to the offensive line.

The Pro Bowl tackle suffered a ruptured biceps in Week 3 of of the 2022 campaign, ending his season prematurely. Slater is now fully healthy and will be a key cornerstone piece in what projects to be the best offensive line quarterback Justin Herbert has played with in his young career, as Corey Linsley, Zion Johnson and Jamaree Salyer represent a solid interior OL.
Slater instantly solidified a left tackle spot that had been an otherwise problematic area for the Chargers over the years, ultimately earning second-team All-Pro honors as well as Pro-Bowl nod to begin his career. Besides the Week 15 game Slater missed due to COVID-19, the 315-pound tackle played every offensive snap for Los Angeles. Situated in a strong left side of the offensive line, expect the Northwestern product to once again be an excellent blindside blocker.
The Chargers likely feel fortunate Slater slipped to the 13th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. While the tackle's size doesn't quite match other elite options in the NFL, Slater has proven capable as both a pass and run blocker against some of the stiffer competition in college. Arguably the team's greatest weakness entering the offseason, Slater should immediately slide into a LT spot that has yielded one Pro Bowler since 2007.
