Building momentum in camp

August 4, 2021
Lindsay Jones of The Athletic reports that Wilson and fellow wideout Jaylen Waddle have gotten the most buzz in the early days of training camp.
ANALYSIS
Wilson, who sat out the 2020 season due to concerns related to COVID-19 and was limited to 20 total games between 2018 and 2019, is a deep sleeper for fantasy purposes at this point. Once a vaunted yards-after-catch threat, the 29-year-old may not possess the same level of explosiveness after enduring a long list of injuries, and Miami's revamped receiving corps may be too crowded for him to earn many opportunities even if he's in peak form. That said, Will Fuller (undisclosed) has spent the early portion of training camp on the sideline, and both DeVante Parker and Jaylen Waddle have notable injury records as well. Wilson also earned praise during June minicamp.

Wilson spent the past three seasons in Miami and totaled 25 receptions for 213 yards and zero touchdowns in 14 games during 2021. The 29-year-old should compete with Bisi Johnson and rookie sixth-rounder Jalen Nailor for a depth role in Minnesota's receiving corps.
Since joining the Dolphins via a three-year, $24 million contract back in 2018, a combination of injuries and opting out of the 2020 campaign has led to Wilson suiting up for just 20 games with the team. Only by virtue of having restructured to a one-year, $3 million deal will he have a chance to stick on the roster in 2021, but it appears that his best-case scenario is now to compete with Preston Williams and Lynn Bowden for the No. 4 receiver role.
Wilson hasn't lived up to the three-year, $24 million deal he inked with the Dolphins in 2018, but agreeing to restructure heading into the contract's final season should help him stick to the roster. A significant hip injury hobbled the slot man for the first 13 games of 2019, as he played fewer than half of the team's offensive snaps on all but three occasions and never surpassed 55 percent of snaps, but he managed to end on a high note during the final three games of the season. From Week 15 to 17 the speedy wideout finally handled a starting snap share and developed a connection with Ryan Fitzpatrick, securing 17 of 23 targets for 197 yards. He's favorite for the slot receiver role in 2020.
Wilson was off to a strong start through seven games - 15.0 YPC, 11.2 YPT, three receptions of 40-plus yards, four touchdowns - before a torn labrum and fractured hip caused him to miss the rest of the season. Wilson did not require surgery, but he was still sidelined into May when the Dolphins started OTAs. Assuming he makes it back for the beginning of training camp, Wilson figures to be the team's primary slot receiver while Kenny Stills and DeVante Parker take reps outside. At 5-9, 186, Wilson is small but also fast and athletic - 4.43 40, 123-inch broad jump, 37.5-inch vertical. He'll be playing with a new quarterback (Josh Rosen or Ryan Fitzpatrick) and a new coaching staff, trying to get up to speed while rehabbing from a serious injury. But there is no way the environment could be worse than last year, and Wilson could lead the Dolphins in targets.
Playing primarily out of the slot, the former Chiefs receiver posted a career-high stat line of 42-554-3 in 2017. Wilson is poised to fill an obvious need for the Dolphins, who traded away Jarvis Landry after a whopping 161-target season. Miami's receiver room now includes DeVante Parker, Kenny Stills and Danny Amendola, but Wilson's versatility makes it conceivable that he could find snaps on the outside if another pass-catcher looks better in the slot. Either way, Wilson is on track to earn himself a solid role in Miami's offense, where there's opportunity for him to become a modest weekly fantasy contributor.
Wilson's career trajectory has trended downward over the past few seasons. After emerging to start across from Jeremy Maclin for part of 2015, finishing with 35 grabs for 451 yards and two touchdowns, he was bypassed by the likes of Chris Conley and Tyreek Hill last season. The 5-9 wideout signed a one-year contract as a restricted free agent in the offseason but could test the open market next year if he so chooses. In the meantime, though, Wilson is a good bet to surpass his 31 receptions for 279 yards and two touchdowns from 2016 due to the release of Maclin in early June.
Wilson hung on to the No. 2 wide receiver spot behind Jeremy Maclin in 2015, but that resulted in just 451 receiving yards on 35 receptions (57 targets) and two receiving touchdowns. The Chiefs spiced things up in the offseason by adding multiple veteran wideouts (Rod Streater and Mike Williams) and a couple more in the 2016 NFL Draft (Demarcus Robinson and Tyreek Hill). Second-year wideout Chris Conley also returns, leaving a jumble to battle it out for the second slot. Wilson likely enters camp the favorite to keep the job, but certainly isn't locked in.
Wilson - an undrafted rookie in 2014 - didn’t see the field much for three-quarters of the season, recording just four catches for 51 yards over the first 13 weeks. However, the youngster developed a strong rapport with quarterback Alex Smith late in the season, serving as the team’s second wideout behind Dwayne Bowe and racking up 209 receiving yards in Weeks 14-16. While the Chiefs added Jeremy Maclin through free agency and spent a third-round draft pick on former Georgia wide receiver Chris Conley, Wilson enters 2015 as the incumbent and favorite to win the second wideout spot again.
Signed as an undrafted rookie free agent, Wilson enters the season with an opportunity to compete for playing time in the slot for the Chiefs and perhaps as a returner.
