Weekly Rankings: Week 4 Value Meter

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

Sunday Update Complete

Bye Weeks Begin: Jets and Niners

Welcome to the Weekly Value Meter Rankings. This is a guide to help you decide who to start and sit in a given week. It's is not a season-long ranking nor a draft guide, and it's also not really intended as a free agent guide. While I appreciate that you want my opinion on pickups, every league is different, and your decision on whether to add/drop a particular player might also be dictated by other factors than who is rated higher in a given week.

Here are my operating assumptions for the rankings:

- The RB/WR/TE position rankings are for PPR leagues.
- The Flex rankings are for Standard leagues.
- 1 point per 10 rushing/receiving yards.
- 1 point per 20 passing yards.
- 4 points per passing touchdowns.

These are the rankings I use when I make my start/sit decisions. Please consult the rankings first before asking "Should I start Patrick Mahomes or Eli Manning?"

These are my particular rankings. If you want a second opinion elsewhere on the site, you can see our Weekly Projections.

Starting after Week 1, the rankings for the subsequent week will first post on Tuesday nights, roughly around 10:00 pm ET. I will then do a set of updates before kickoff on Thursday, and again before kickoff on Sunday morning.

I welcome debate on the rankings in the comments. Please keep it friendly.

Quarterbacks

1.Patrick Mahomes KC at DET

Quarterbacks

1.Patrick Mahomes KC at DET
2.Deshaun Watson HOU vs. CAR
3.Russell Wilson SEA at ARI
4.Dak Prescott DAL at NO
5.*Tom Brady NE at BUF
Note: (Calf) Removed from the injury list.
6.Jared Goff LA vs. TB
7.Matt Ryan ATL vs. TEN
8.Aaron Rodgers GB vs. PHI
9.*Lamar Jackson BAL vs. CLE
Note: ***Might not have much from Mark Andrews again this week.***
10.*Philip Rivers LAC at MIA
Note: ***Won't have Mike Williams among his targets.***
11.*Daniel Jones NYG vs. WAS
Note: Tremendous debut - about the only downside was his ball protection. Still, nothing like starting off against the Bucs and Redskins.
12.*Kyler Murray ARZ vs. SEA
Note: Ran a lot on designed runs, but was also running for his life, getting sacked eight times.
13.*Kyle Allen CAR at HOU
Note: Locked in for another start with Cam already declared out.
14.*Matthew Stafford DET vs. KC
Note: ***Popped up on the injury list Friday with a hip injury, and the pain there has worsened since he suffered the injury. He plans on playing through the pain (he hasn't missed a game since 2010), but this is the most pain he has been in over his recent history.***
15.*Jameis Winston TB at LAR
Note: Winston had a big fantasy day, but his one interception was ugly and indirectly costly. The Giants didn't score after the pick, but they went into a shell offensively until it was too late.
16.*Baker Mayfield CLE at BAL
Note: The struggles were real - some of this is on him, some of this is on the play-calling and a lot of this is on the OL not giving him enough time.
17.*Carson Wentz PHI at GB
Note: I wanted to make a joke about Wentz's receivers but instead decided to drop it.
18.*Jacoby Brissett IND vs. OAK
Note: Looked strong against the Falcons, completing his first 16 passes. The offense struggled more in the second half after T.Y. Hilton got hurt, so watch Hilton's status closely. ***Moved down with Hilton unlikely to play.***
19.Marcus Mariota TEN at ATL
20.Andy Dalton CIN at PIT
21.Josh Allen BUF vs. NE
22.*Case Keenum WAS at NYG
Note: Keenum will remain the starter despite turning the ball over five times on Monday night, but clearly the leash is getting shorter. Sat out practice Wednesday with a sprained foot, but returned Thursday and will start again this week. Dwayne Haskins split some reps with him on the first-team, however. ***Confirmed as the starter this week.***
23.Derek Carr OAK at IND
24.*Mason Rudolph PIT vs. CIN
Note: Super conservative early, but opened it up a little more in the second half. If the OL can give him enough time Monday night, he should have a better outing against the Bengals.
25.Mitchell Trubisky CHI vs. MIN
26.Teddy Bridgewater NO vs. DAL
27.Gardner Minshew JAC at DEN
28.Kirk Cousins MIN at CHI
29.*Joe Flacco DEN vs. JAX
Note: Flacco had two very costly turnovers (one fumble, one INT) in the loss to the Packers.
30.*Josh Rosen MIA vs. LAC
Note: Twice was evaluated for injuries during the loss to the Cowboys - once for a concussion and once for a hand injury. (Elbow) Full practice Thursday.
31.*Cam Newton CAR at HOU
Note: Newton's injury has been diagnosed as a Lisfranc injury that will keep him out indefinitely. Declared out this week.
32.Taysom Hill NO vs. DAL
33.Dwayne Haskins WAS at NYG
34.Drew Brees NO vs. DAL

Running Backs

1.Ezekiel Elliott DAL at NO
2.Christian McCaffrey CAR at HOU
3.*Alvin Kamara NO vs. DAL
Note: Highest snap share (87 percent) of his career.
4.*Austin Ekeler LAC at MIA
Note: Starting this week, but this could be his last start with Melvin Gordon ending his holdout. ***Though Gordon will be active, Ekeler will still start and Justin Jackson is out.***
5.Derrick Henry TEN at ATL
6.*Dalvin Cook MIN at CHI
Note: ***Hate the matchup, but it's hard to argue with the workload - I've moved him up from 11 to 6.***
7.*Kerryon Johnson DET vs. KC
Note: Constantly hit in the backfield, as the Eagles keyed on him - his 20-for-36 line looks awful, but he did well to make the first tackler miss on multiple occasions.
8.David Johnson ARZ vs. SEA
9.Marlon Mack IND vs. OAK
10.James Conner PIT vs. CIN
11.Mark Ingram BAL vs. CLE
12.Nick Chubb CLE at BAL
13.Leonard Fournette JAC at DEN
14.*Aaron Jones GB vs. PHI
Note: (Shoulder) Full practice Tuesday - snap share with Jamaal Williams is the bigger concern.
15.*Chris Carson SEA at ARI
Note: Another lost fumble.
16.Joe Mixon CIN at PIT
17.Josh Jacobs OAK at IND
18.Wayne Gallman NYG vs. WAS
19.*James White NE at BUF
20.Todd Gurley LA vs. TB
21.Chris Thompson WAS at NYG
22.*David Montgomery CHI vs. MIN
Note: It was frustrating to see him only get 13 carries in a game where they jumped out to a 28-0 lead.
23.Devonta Freeman ATL vs. TEN
24.*Miles Sanders PHI at GB
Note: Clearly dominant running back, though Jordan Howard ran well and stole the touchdown. Lost a fumble and put another on the ground before that - fumbling was a problem for him at Penn St.
25.*Sony Michel NE at BUF
Note: Really struggled to get going - losing his lead blocker James Develin hurts.
26.*Carlos Hyde HOU vs. CAR
Note: C.J. Anderson is working out with the team, which could eventually mean fewer carries for Hyde.
27.*LeSean McCoy KC at DET
Note: (Ankle) Scored twice, but also had a setback with his ankle. Still, he's expected to be ready for Week 4. Full practice Thursday.
28.*Frank Gore BUF vs. NE
Note: ***Devin Singletary is likely out again this week.***
29.Phillip Lindsay DEN vs. JAX
30.Kenyan Drake MIA vs. LAC
31.*Darrel Williams KC at DET
Note: Could have another big role this week, with Damien Williams still not practicing. ***Another week with a significant role.***
32.Peyton Barber TB at LAR
33.Jordan Howard PHI at GB
34.*Royce Freeman DEN vs. JAX
Note: Had a touchdown called back on a terrible holding call against Emmanuel Sanders. (Shoulder) Limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday. ***Cleared from the injury list.***
35.*Jamaal Williams GB vs. PHI
Note: (Neck) Full participant in Tuesday's practice.
36.Adrian Peterson WAS at NYG
37.*Rex Burkhead NE at BUF
Note: (Foot) Limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday. ***Listed as questionable and even categorized as a game-time decision in some circles, but he's expected to play.***
38.Gus Edwards BAL vs. CLE
39.Ronald Jones TB at LAR
40.Tony Pollard DAL at NO
41.*Latavius Murray NO vs. DAL
Note: Only two carries last week - falling well short of the Mark Ingram role.
42.Duke Johnson HOU vs. CAR
43.Tarik Cohen CHI vs. MIN
44.Malcolm Brown LA vs. TB
45.*Ito Smith ATL vs. TEN
Note: Suffered a concussion in the loss to the Colts. Limited practice Thursday - still remains in the concussion protocol but this is good progress at least. ***Cleared from the concussion protocol.***
46.Giovani Bernard CIN at PIT
47.Alexander Mattison MIN at CHI
48.Ty Johnson DET vs. KC
49.C.J. Prosise SEA at ARI
50.T.J. Yeldon BUF vs. NE
51.Dion Lewis TEN at ATL
52.Chase Edmonds ARZ vs. SEA
53.Nyheim Hines IND vs. OAK
54.*Jaylen Samuels PIT vs. CIN
Note: No touches in Week 3.
55.*Rashaad Penny SEA at ARI
Note: (Hamstring) Could return to practice as early as Thursday. Didn't practice Wednesday. ***Limited but increasing practice Thursday and Friday - could play this week.***
56.*Melvin Gordon LAC at MIA
Note: Holdout has ended, but the Chargers have been granted a roster exemption for this week and Gordon isn't expected to play. ***Has been added to the active roster and could play this week, though some sources suggest that he'll only be used in an emergency.***
57.*Jordan Wilkins IND vs. OAK
Note: It turns out Marlon Mack was just fine, so Wilkins received only three carries.
58.DeAndre Washington OAK at IND
59.Jalen Richard OAK at IND
60.Dare Ogunbowale TB at LAR
61.Kalen Ballage MIA vs. LAC
62.Darwin Thompson KC at DET
63.Justice Hill BAL vs. CLE
64.Mike Davis CHI vs. MIN
65.Qadree Ollison ATL vs. TEN
66.D'Ernest Johnson CLE at BAL
67.Ryquell Armstead JAC at DEN
68.*Devin Singletary BUF vs. NE
Note: (Hamstring) Limited practice Thursday - could still play this week, but there's been no definitive statement on his status from coach Sean McDermott yet. ***Made encouraging progress in practice Friday, but according to Ian Rapoport he's not expected to play.***
69.*Damien Williams KC at DET
Note: (Knee) Hasn't yet practiced this week. ***Declared out again this week.***
70.*Justin Jackson LAC at MIA
Note: This week is a last-hurrah with Melvin Gordon ending his holdout. He also was added to the injury report on Thursday with a calf issue. ***Declared out, and it could be a multi-week issue. Sadly, he's a drop now.***
71.*Saquon Barkley NYG vs. WAS
Note: High ankle sprain - estimated absence is 4-to-8 weeks with a likelihood of being closer to the late end of the estimate. He's seeking a second opinion on Tuesday. Some good news - this injury won't require surgery, which lowers his estimated absence to 4-to-6 weeks.

20.Sterling Shepard NYG vs. WAS
21.Mecole Hardman KC at DET
