Dustin Keller took an ugly hit in Saturday's preseason game, and Sunday morning the Dolphins confirmed that he is out for the season with a torn ACL, PCL, and MCL, plus a dislocation of his knee. This was one of the more gruesome knee injuries in recent memory, so Keller -- who is on a one-year contract -- may be impacted beyond 2013. The top three remaining tight ends on Miami's roster are 2011 sixth-round pick Charles Clay, 2012 third-round pick Michael Egnew, and 2013 fourth-round pick Dion Sims. It will be surprising if any of the three puts up numbers similar to what a healthy Keller figured to produce.
Victor Cruz left Sunday's preseason game with a foot injury, but fortunately for the Giants, X-rays came back negative and the star receiver has been diagnosed with a bruised heel. Cruz was walking around on the sideline later in the game, and based on the initial diagnosis, he should be ready for Week 1.
Wes Welker was diagnosed with a mild right ankle sprain following Saturday's preseason contest against Seattle. The Broncos haven't provided much information on the injury, but the team's use of the term "mild" indicates that Welker shouldn't miss too much time.
Kendall Wright has been diagnosed with a sprained right knee and will be out for the remainder of the preseason. Following Saturday's game, Wright said that he thought the injury was a sprain; but there was still some concern about possible torn ligaments. Wright may not be ready by Week 1, and if he isn't, there could be more targets available for Nate Washington, Justin Hunter, and Damian Williams.
Coby Fleener just got over a concussion, only to suffer a sprained knee in Sunday's preseason game against the Giants. The good news is that the sprain is mild, but with fellow tight end Dwayne Allen (foot) also injured, the Colts suddenly have issues at a position that figured to be one of the team's biggest strengths. Health permitting, Fleener and Allen are both expected to have major roles in the offense.
As expected, Jamaal Charles (strained foot) returned to practice Sunday, after missing less than a week of action. He doesn't appear to be in any danger for the regular season, and could be looking at an increased workload under new head coach Andy Reid. The Chiefs have some question marks behind Charles, as rookie Knile Davis is expected to handle the No. 2 role. Davis is an excellent athlete (4.37 40 at 230 pounds) with a third-round pedigree, but he was limited by injuries in college, and was a non-factor in his final year at Arkansas.
Mario Manningham (knee) will begin the season on the PUP list, ruling him out for the first six weeks. The news isn't entirely unexpected, but it's still rather disappointing for a team that will already be without Michael Crabtree (Achilles) for a significant chunk of time, if not the entire 2013 season. After Anquan Boldin, the most notable names remaining on the San Francisco depth chart at wide receiver are Kyle Williams (hamstring), Austin Collie, 2012 first-round pick A.J. Jenkins, and rookie fourth-round pick Quinton Patton. At this point, it's still unclear which of these receivers are most likely to see playing time.
DeVier Posey (torn Achilles) is expected to return from the PUP list for Monday's practice. Once he's back at full strength, Posey should enter the mix for playing time behind starters Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins (concussion).
