NFL Free Agency: Best of the Rest

While most of the top free agents don't last more than 48 hours into the league year, there are still a few potential gems that remain unsigned at the two-week mark. None of these guys is a sure thing to contribute to fantasy teams next season, but all three have reasonable upside if they happen to land in the right situation (and maybe catch a few breaks between now and Week 1).

QB Robert Griffin III

This one is admittedly a long shot, but Griffin is arguably the second-best quarterback left on the market, trailing only Ryan Fitzpatrick, who still figures to re-sign with the Jets

Recent rumors mostly connect RG3 with a Browns team that was previously assumed to be targeting either Jared Goff or Carson Wentz with the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Not that signing Griffin would preclude Cleveland from selecting a quarterback, but it is possible that the team just isn't high on either Goff or Wentz, in which case a Griffin-Josh McCown combination might suffice as a holdover until the next draft.

Though highly unlikely to ever regain his rookie-year form, Griffin does have the kind of running ability that can lead to reasonable fantasy value (at least in deeper/two-QB leagues) even when a player is harming his real-life team. Other potential fits include the 49ers, Rams and Broncos, with Cleveland or San Francisco making the most sense.

RB Arian Foster

Set to turn 30 in August and rehabbing a torn Achilles, Foster will have to settle for a contract without much guaranteed money, and then he'll have to prove that he's still good/healthy enough to warrant a significant role.

He may be best suited for a third-down job after running for just 163 yards on 63 carries (2.6 YPC) in four games last season -- but with an impressive 22-227-2 receiving line that bailed out fantasy owners.

The Raiders, Patriots, Seahawks and Broncos could also use a veteran running back with receiving skills, and the Dolphins probably want someone to challenge Jay Ajayi for the starting job.

WR Anquan Boldin

The 35-year-old largely worked out of the slot for San Francisco in 2015, posting a respectable 69-789-4 receiving line on 110 targets in 14 games. Of course, the modest stat line looks a lot better when you consider that no other 49er topped 33 catches, the total posted by free-agent bust Torrey Smith in his first season out west.

While a return to San Francisco (and his role as a No. 1 wideout) looks like a long shot, Boldin would probably still be the second-best wide receiver on a number of teams, including potential contenders in Cincinnati, Atlanta, Houston and Kansas City.

Atlanta would have been a perfect fit, but the Falcons oddly gave the underwhelming Mohamed Sanu a five-year, $32.5 million contract that reportedly includes $14 million in guarantees. The Bengals are the team to watch, as they have a clear need for a No. 2 wide receiver and can entice Boldin with the opportunity to compete for a ring.
