Herbert Jones

25-Year-Old ForwardF
New Orleans Pelicans
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Jones recently signed a four-year, $54 million contract with New Orleans, indicating that the franchise sees him as an important part of their core. The 24-year-old forward is unlikely to put up gaudy numbers, but his consistency with his availability and production is a positive asset for fantasy managers. Jones played in 68 games in 2022-23 after making 78 appearances in the previous season. Last year, he averaged 9.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.6 steals in 29.5 minutes on 46.9/33.5/76.4 shooting splits. While his efficiency isn't abysmal, it also isn't a major positive. A large portion of Jones' fantasy value comes from his defensive production, as he ranked eighth in the NBA in steals per game last year. Although the Pelicans' roster is largely unchanged going into 2023-24, the potential for Zion Williamson to start the year healthy and the emergence of Trey Murphy could push Jones out of his starting job. That said, Murphy's off-season knee injury could open minutes for Jones. The forward started in all 66 of his appearances in 2022-23. Overall, Jones is better-suited for eight-category formats in fantasy, though he's mostly a deep-league target. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Herbert Jones was born in October 1998 in Greensboro, Alabama. Jones is the son of Walter Sr. and Verlander Jones. His older brother, Walter Jr, played college basketball for Texas-Rio Grande Valley and Alabama A&M. Jones played varsity basketball since he was in seventh grade at Sunshine High School. Before the school closed in 2015, he helped his team make the Class 1A state finals as he played alongside his brother and was coached by his dad. For his junior season, Jones transferred to Hale County High School. During his senior year of high school, he won the Class 4A player of the year, averaging 16.6 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists and leading his school to its first-ever state title. Jones committed to the University of Alabama and averaged 5.3 points in his first two seasons. During his junior year, Jones averaged 7.9 points and 6.4 rebounds and was named to the SEC All-Defensive Team. After returning for his senior season, Jones was named SEC Player of the Year and SEC Defensive Player of the Year, averaging 11.2 points, 6.6. Rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. Jones was selected in the second round of the 2021 NBA draft by the New Orleans Pelicans.

Passive performance Tuesday
FNew Orleans Pelicans
April 16, 2024
Jones finished Tuesday's 110-106 Play-In Game loss to the Lakers with 10 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 3Pt) and two steals across 35 minutes.
ANALYSIS
Jones failed to have a significant impact in the loss, delivering serviceable contributions on both ends of the floor. Tuesday's loss will now see the Pelicans having to suit up Friday, where they will face either the Kings or the Warriors. Although Jones is a key piece for New Orleans, his production is something that typically fluctuates in both fantasy and reality.

Appears in 65th contest
FNew Orleans Pelicans
March 26, 2024
Jones logged his 65th start of the season in Sunday's win over Detroit, making him eligible for regular-season awards and All-NBA nominations.
ANALYSIS
Jones is a strong candidate to appear on an All-NBA Defensive Team for 2023-24. The only hardware in Jones' cabinet thus far is an NBA All-Rookie Second Team honor from 2022, but he has been a critical component of New Orleans' seventh-ranked defense this year.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2022
2021
Despite a slow start to his rookie season, Jones ended as a must-roster player across all category leagues come April, thanks mainly to his productivity in the steals department. Playing in 78 of a possible 82 games, Jones compiled averages of 9.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.7 steals and 0.8 blocks in just under 30 minutes per game. His durability saw him end the campaign as a top-40 talent in total value -- an outcome that no one could have seen coming. The Pelicans have once again upgraded their roster, and while there will be more competition for minutes, Jones has established himself as an essential part of the rotation. His lack of peripheral contributions limits his overall upside, but he has a genuine chance of putting together another top-100 season despite the Pelicans' depth.
Jones was selected by the Pelicans with the 35th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Jones is a great all-around player who built a reputation as a strong defender at Alabama. In his senior collegiate season, the 22-year-old averaged 11.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks in 27.3 minutes. The 6-foot-8 forward could play a depth role for a Pelicans team that will have significant roster turnover in 2021-22.
