2023 Fantasy Outlook
Bane has improved in each of his first three seasons in the NBA and is looking at increased offensive responsibilities to start 2023-24 with Ja Morant suspended to start the year and Dillon Brooks now in Houston. While he was more of a scorer/jump shooter earlier in his career, Bane improved as a facilitator last year and should be Memphis' go-to offensive playmaker until Morant returns to the team. Another sign Memphis is content handing the keys to Bane is the fact the 2020 No. 30 overall pick signed a five-year, $207 million extension this offseason. Bane missed 17 straight games early last season due to a sprained toe, marking the first significant injury of his pro career, but he underwent a successful procedure in mid-May to correct the issue and is expected to be fully healthy ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. The TCU product averaged career highs in points (21.5), rebounds (5.0), assists (4.4) and minutes (31.8) in 2022-23 and attempted 16.2 field goals, 7.0 three-pointers and 3.5 free throws per game while posting 47.9/40.8/88.3 shooting splits. Bane has yet to shoot below 40 percent from three over a full campaign and is set up to have the most usage of his career next season. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Bane was born June 25, 1998. He was raised by his great grandparents, Bob and Fabbie Bane, and his guardian is his uncle, Tony Bane. Desmond focused on baseball until eighth grade, also playing football and soccer, but ultimately opted to pursue basketball. Bane played basketball for Seton Catholic High School, a small private institution in Richmond, Indiana. As a senior, he averaged a state-high 30 points, 11.5 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 3.2 blocks per game and was named the MVP of the Wettig Memorial Holiday Tournament. In his high school career, Bane scored 1,991 points, surpassing 1988 Indiana Mr. Basketball winner Woody Austin for the most in Wayne County history. After high school, Bane opted to play college ball for Texas Christian University. He played all four seasons at TCU and was named to the Second-team All-Big 12 as a junior and First-team All-Big 12 as a senior. Bane debuted for TCU in 2016-17, playing 39 games as a freshman and drawing 13 starts. He averaged 7.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 20.7 minutes. He became a full-time starter as a sophomore, averaging 12.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 30.5 minutes. Bane's role increased again as a junior, as he averaged 15.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals in 35.5 minutes. Finally, as a senior, Bane averaged 16.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.5 steals in 36.1 minutes. That resulted in him being voted to the All-Big 12 First Team. Arguably the best performance of his collegiate career was Nov. 30, 2018 in a win over Central Michigan, where Bane recorded 24 points (8-11 FG, 4-6 3Pt, 4-4 FT), nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks and one steal in 32 minutes.

Expected to have healthy offseason
GMemphis Grizzlies
Back
April 15, 2024
Bane (back) will be sidelined for a few more weeks but is expected to have a healthy summer, Drew Hill of The Daily Memphian reports.
ANALYSIS
Bane averaged 24.7 points, 5.4 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 34.9 minutes over his first 36 appearances of 2023-24 before injuries derailed his campaign. An ankle injury sidelined Bane from mid-January to mid-March, and he appeared in only five of the ensuing six games before a back issue cost him the final nine contests of the regular season. It was a lost season for the Grizzlies as a whole, as Ja Morant (suspension/shoulder), Marcus Smart (finger/foot) and others also missed extended periods. However, it sounds like the Grizzlies will have a healthy offseason, which bodes well for their chances of bouncing back in 2024-25.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could rejoin lineup this weekend
GMemphis Grizzlies
March 12, 2024
Bane has progressed to five-on-five work in his recovery from a left ankle sprain, and he could return to the Grizzlies' lineup as early as this weekend, Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.
ANALYSIS
The fourth-year guard has been sidelined since mid-January with a Grade 3 sprain, so far missing Memphis' last 27 games. Bane should immediately move into a lead role in the backcourt for the injury-ravaged squad, and when he's been in the lineup this season, he's averaged 24.4 points, 5.3 assists, 4.6 rebounds, 3.3 made three-pointers and 1.0 steals a game.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2022
2021
Bane assembled a breakout 2021-22 campaign and was one of the finalists for Most Improved Player. After demonstrating his upside as a shooter as a rookie, Bane took on an expanded offensive role, and his efficiency held firm. Notably, he increased his two-point attempts and added some playmaking responsibilities. Altogether, his increased responsibilities resulted in 18.2 points on shooting splits of 46/44/90, which included 3.0 three-point makes per game. In addition, he tallied 4.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals in 29.8 minutes, making him one of the biggest fantasy sleepers. After ranking 157th in per-game fantasy scoring as a rookie, Bane ascended to 29th last season. Encouragingly, that strong play translated to the postseason, where he averaged 18.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists across 35.7 minutes in 12 appearances. Expect Bane to maintain a similar role this year, though, given his age (24) and evident importance to the team, it's fair to expect statistical improvement. He'll fight a bit for touches with Dillon Brooks, who played just 32 games last year due to injury, but Bane's development tracks much better, so he'll likely take priority within the offense.
Bane appeared in 68 of 72 regular-season games in his first season in the NBA. The rookie out of TCU displayed an efficient shot by connecting on 46.9 percent from the field and 43.2 percent from downtown en route to 9.2 points per game. He posted double-digit points in 32 contests and 20-plus points on three occasions. However, Bane averaged just 3.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.2 blocks per game and finished outside the top 150 of overall fantasy scorers. The 6-foot-5 wing displayed promise of being a great defender as he registered multiple steals in nine games, but he failed to consistently put up those numbers. He will look to build off of his strong rookie season in Year 2, but he will have to compete with 2021 No. 10 overall pick Ziaire Williams and recently-acquired Jarrett Culver for playing time. Bane will likely garner a similar role for Memphis next season, unless Williams or Culver exceeds expectations.
