2024 Fantasy Outlook
Year 1 of Rodon's six-year, $162 million pact with the Yankees was a disaster, as he missed a large portion of the season due to injury and struggled to a 6.85 ERA in his 64.1 innings on the mound. He suffered a forearm strain in spring training before later dealing with back and hamstring injuries. The back remains a concern moving forward after Rodon revealed in May that it's a chronic issue. Of course he's also battled a myriad of elbow and shoulder trouble in his career, so the lefty has to be considered a giant health risk. He was trending in a positive direction in 2021-22 -- he ranked second among pitchers in fWAR across those two seasons behind only Gerrit Cole and Zack Wheeler -- and his breaking stuff was still effective last season. Pitchers don't tend to get healthier in their 30s, but Rodon should be in the Yankees' rotation when available and the results should be better on a per-start basis. Read Past Outlooks
Healthy heading into season
Rodon pitched 19.1 innings over five starts in Grapefruit League action, posting a 4.19 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB.
ANALYSIS
Rodon made just one appearance last spring before suffering a forearm injury that significantly cut down his season, so the fact that he made it through the exhibition slate without any health issues this spring is a positive development. Per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, Rodon dropped weight in the offseason and looked to be in better shape in camp as he aims to put last year's injury-plagued and largely forgettable performance in the rearview mirror. While the southpaw's spring stats weren't overwhelming, Kuty reports that Rodon's fastball sat in the mid-90s, which is in line with where it has been during recent campaigns. The Yankees may need Rodon to step up as the team's ace with Gerrit Cole likely out for at least the first two months of the regular season due to an elbow injury.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
No date for Yankees debut
Rodon has yet to make his season debut with the Yankees due to back soreness, an injury that has now become chronic, and he has no timetable to make his season debut, the right-hander told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com on Friday.
ANALYSIS
There's no current target date for a return to the mound, as Rodon noted that "whenever my body tells me I can throw and everyone agrees that I can throw, then I'll start throwing," per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic. Rodon's tenure with the Yankees has been marred by injuries so far. The All-Star right-hander started the season on the injured list due to a forearm strain, and now it remains to be seen when he'll be able to return to action due to this back injury. Needless to say, it's a worrisome situation for the Yankees.

The White Sox declined to extend Rodon the qualifying offer last winter and that decision backfired in a big way as the lefty was a top-10 starter in baseball by most measures. Rodon's 2.25 FIP with San Francisco last season was in fact the best among qualified starters while his 26.1 K-BB% ranked third. He established a new career high with 178 innings -- a 45.1-inning increase over 2021. Now a two-time All-Star, Rodon's stuff is as good as ever despite the injuries earlier in his career. Corbin Burnes and Zack Wheeler are the only pitchers to have racked up more fWAR than Rodon over the past two seasons, and he'll now work atop the Yankees' rotation alongside Gerrit Cole after inking a six-year, $162 million contract with New York.
