Wendelken recorded his second save of the year Thursday and could be taking over the closer role from veteran Tyler Clippard in the season's final weeks.

Clippard struggled Wednesday, allowing three runs in an inning of work, and the Diamondbacks turned to Wendelken for their next save opportunity. With the team sitting at 49-104, it wouldn't be surprising to see the 28-year-old Wendelken continue to see work over the 36-year-old Clippard.

Wendelken's performance took a dip with Oakland last season and he was designated for assignment in mid-August. However, Arizona recognized his solid body of work since 2018 and claimed him off waivers. The 28-year-old earned two wins, four holds and the first two saves of his career across 20 appearances with the Diamondbacks, but he wasn't overly impressive, posting a 4.34 ERA, 6.3 K/9 and 4.3 BB/9 across 18.2 innings. Despite a subpar 2021, he remains one of the most experienced relievers in Arizona's bullpen after the team signed veteran Mark Melancon for their closer role. Wendelken could pick up a save chance or two when Melancon is unavailable, but he's more likely to be an asset for holds after posting an ERA under the 3.60 mark in three straight campaigns between 2018 and 2020.
