2024 Fantasy Outlook
A 31-year-old journeyman who has pitched for three teams over the past two seasons, Gott signed a one-year contract with Oakland this offseason. The right-hander's career numbers aren't impressive, but he projects to fill a high-leverage role in the A's patchwork bullpen with possible closing opportunities in 2024. Gott is only 6-for-17 in save chances throughout his career, but he's picked up double-digit holds in each of the past two seasons. Since adding an effective cutter and sinker to his arsenal in 2022, Gott has improved his hard-hit and barrel percentages, but his career 21 percent strikeout rate leaves a lot to be desired. He also had more meltdowns (18) than shutdowns (13) last year, which speaks to inconsistency. Gott was given an opportunity to close while with the Giants in 2020 and was removed from the role after a few short weeks. Don't expect double-digit saves, as there are closer candidates in Oakland with much higher upside. Read Past Outlooks

March 24, 2024
The Athletics placed Gott (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Sunday.
ANALYSIS
His move to the 60-day IL frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for veteran reliever Austin Adams, whom the Athletics acquired from the Mets on Sunday. Gott is slated to undergo Tommy John surgery in the coming days and will miss the entire 2024 season, and quite likely, the early part of the 2025 campaign.

PSeattle Mariners
May 5, 2023
Gott has made 16 appearances so far this season, tied for the second most in MLB.
ANALYSIS
Gott's 2.30 ERA is supported by a 2.85 expected ERA, and opponents hold an expected slugging percentage of just .317 against the 30-year-old. Paul Seward is locked in as Seattle's closer, but Gott is a name to remember if injury strikes.

Those who took a chance new Giants manager Gabe Kapler would deploy Gott in the late innings were rewarded initially as the right-hander notched four saves, a hold and a win in his first six appearances. Unfortunately, Gott promptly fell apart, allowing 11 earned runs over his next three outings, spanning just 1.1 innings. He settled down and pitched well for the next three-plus weeks, but the irreparable damage was done. Gott's season ended prematurely in mid-September as he was shut down with elbow inflammation. Despite Gott's disastrous three-outing stretch, San Francisco signed him to a 2021 contract, and he'll presumably work in low-leverage scenarios before eventually returning to higher-pressure situations. Unless he reverts to 2019's 26.6 K% level, or unless he sneaks back into the saves picture, Gott probably won't be worthwhile in mixed leagues.
Gott got his longest look in the majors in 2019, compiling a career-high 52.2 innings, primarily in middle relief. Before an elbow injury cut his season short in late August, the right-hander emerged as one of the Giants' most reliable bullpen options, compiling a spotless 7-0 record along with a 3.12 FIP and 1.10 WHIP. He also flashed legitimate strikeout numbers for the first time in his big-league career, posting a 26.6 K%. The sudden jump in strikeout rate can largely be attributed to Gott's decision to swap his primary pitch from a sinkerball, which induced a meager 8.5 K% in 2018, to a 95-mph four-seam fastball that registered a 26.4 K% last season. At 27 years old, Gott appears to have found his place in the big leagues and should play an important role in San Francisco's bullpen next season. His fantasy value will depend upon whether that role includes a bump to more high-leverage situations.
Gott was picked up from the Angels in the Yunel Escobar trade last offseason, and ended up spending most of 2016 posting mediocre numbers for Triple-A Syracuse. The righty has a big fastball with some sink, but his inability to develop a reliable offspeed pitch has kept him from earning a spot in the Nationals' middle relief corps. There could be some spots open in their bullpen this spring, especially since they missed out on the big-name closers, so if Gott can sharpen his curveball then he could play a role on Washington's 2017 staff.
Gott had a successful run with the Angels after being recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake in July, and he was able to keep his ERA down with the help of a 57 percent groundball rate. He couldn't find the strikeouts that have been a staple of his career in the minor leagues, as he notched just 5.1 K/9, despite an average fastball velocity over 96 mph. Traded to Washington in the Yunel Escobar deal, Gott now faces even more competition for saves than he did in Anaheim and figures to be at least third or fourth in the pecking order entering the season.
