2024 Fantasy Outlook
Gil underwent Tommy John surgery in May of 2022 and made it back for two appearances at Triple-A in September of 2023. His mid-to-upper-90s fastball velocity was back, averaging 96 mph while touching 99 mph. His devastating high-spin slider was also at its pre-surgery 85-86 mph velocity. This is his last season with a minor-league option, so the 25-year-old righty may move back and forth between Triple-A and the majors, particularly if the Yankees want to keep developing him as a starter. While Gil's repertoire is pretty shallow -- he'll flash a decent changeup but it is rarely used -- the biggest swing skill for him will be his command, as his fastball and slider are good enough pitches to turn a lineup over twice if he's locating them. He's had a walk rate north of 14 percent during four of his six assignments since 2021, and the hope is that his control will be passable as he gets further removed from surgery. If he does get moved to the bullpen, Gil has the stuff to pitch in high-leverage situations. Read Past Outlooks
