Melbourne withdrew McDonald from Monday's match-up with West Coast as a result of a lingering back injury, AFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Melbourne's coaching staff had hoped McDonald would be able to recover enough from a knock to his lower back suffered in last week's defeat of Gold Coast, but instead withdrew him from selection for Monday's game after learning the injury had damaged a disk and caused spasms. The forward was replaced by midfielder James Jordan. No word yet whether McDonald will be available for a Round 22 showdown with Adelaide.

McDonald suffered a back injury in Saturday's 98-point drumming of Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium and is considered "a day-by-day proposition" heading into a Round 21 match up with West Coast, AFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin noted in a post-match press conference that McDonald is "pretty sore" and "was struggling there for a while," but the club remains hopeful that its star forward will be available against West Coast next week.
